Rape on college campuses is going up ladies. And with me and a lot of my friends being college students, this scares me. And who wouldn’t it scare? We are fighting so hard as it is to be a woman, why should we have to fight for fucking rights about rape. It makes me so mad that this issue is not being taken seriously and it should be because it is a crime. In my last blog I wrote about marital rape meaning a spouse rapes you. Well some people don’t believe this is rape, a lot of states won’t even treat this as a crime! What the fuck? How can we let this happen? It is a crime; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
I want college women to know as much as they can about rape so that it doesn’t happen to them. There are some great tips I have learned that are pretty much common scene. Be aware of what is going on around you. Just be aware of who is around you and if something doesn’t seem right get out of there immediately or call someone and do not get off the phone until you are in a safe place.
Avoid excessive use of alcohol or drugs. This can impair your judgment and more rapes happen under the influence of alcohol so be cautious when you are drinking, and don’t set your drink down to allow someone to slip something in it. In my experience, don’t go to a party alone either. Take someone you trust to be there for you and watch out for you. A good idea me and my friends use is one of us have to stay sober to make sure we all stay safe.
O and my favorite one is to carry a whistle with you. If you fee l like you are in danger blow the whistle. This will draw attention to you making people notice you are in need of help. My suggestion is to put it on your key chain and when walking though a parking lot have your keys out!
I really hope this helps, and if you have any questions please feel free to email me at aknorr@missouriwestern.edu. I would love to answer any questions you may have and if I don’t know the answer I will gladly research it!
